isovideo's Frame Rate Conversion Technology Applied to the Big Screen

(Beaverton, Oregon - October 3, 2014) isovideo announces that a highly inspirational documentary “Finding the Gold Within” by independent film maker/producer Karina Epperlein used their frame rate conversion technology/services for its entire footage conversions (converting from 1920x1080p 29.97 to 1920x1080p 23.976). The film will be world premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival on October 3 and 4, and October 12th, 4:15 pm at the San Rafael 2014.

The film follows six young black men from Akron, Ohio, entering college, determined to redefine society’s images and low expectations of them. Music, poetry, football, basketball, international relations, law studies, and the desire to change the world, are their guiding posts.

Having attended the nationally acclaimed youth program Alchemy, Inc. for four to seven years, they are sitting solidly in themselves. Well trained in critical thinking and unusually articulate about their inner lives and outer struggles, the young men guide us through - and into - the stories that saved them or set them apart.

Can they keep their eyes on the prize? Will they become the heroes within their own stories?

After four years of film making, Karina found out her beautiful crafted film at 29.97p slipped into a visual nightmare right before her own eyes when doing frame rate conversion to 23.976p, as this was a necessary step prior to the DCP process. After searching on the Internet, she contacted us, and gave us one of her troubled shots to test. We quickly did the short conversion, and immediately she and her production supervisor liked our results. We were honored to do the whole film conversion in the end.

It turns out that this was a fairly technical challenging project, as the film contains many fast motion scenes such as drumming, basketball, boxing, street scenes with cars, wide panning shots, as well as many special effects scenes such as slowmos, etc. all in 29.97p. Several of Viarte frame rate conversion technology's unique features were used during the conversion process, especially, adding accurate and necessary motion-blur when down frame-rate converting to reduce playback judder. In the end, Karina and her production supervisor were very pleased with our conversion results.

“Keith and his team are passionate magicians, I don’t know what I would have done without them. With their dedication to detail and excellence, quick communication and turn around, and most of all their incredible skills and knowledge, isovideo delivered a most beautiful end result. Filmmakers need to know about their services, I can’t stop raving about them,” said Karina Epperlein.

"As the trends move towards multi-platform content distribution and high frame-rate (HFR) capture, isovideo's Viarte conversion technologies and services can help filmmakers to shoot at their desired frame rates, or even shoot interlaced, with the assurance that they can achieve high quality conversions for cinematic presentation at 24 or 48”, said Keith Slavin, CTO, isovideo LLC.
